7 images"‘It’s too little, too late. It’s a joke. A joke. It’s a whole joke,’ Randy Messelt said of the president’s federal farm aid programs, looking up at an empty 150-foot barn that once housed 53 cattle." This was one of those mornings where you are grateful for the rare glimpses of humor and love. Walking up the driveway of Randy’s home, I felt a sense of loss. Maybe it was the rainy, 630am drive there, maybe it was knowing a bit of his history, maybe it’s just 2020. When he finished his morning coffee and started towards the front door, his partner Bobbi called him back for a kiss. A ritual that seemed only briefly interrupted because I was there. When we were alone and he started his work, he told me about his son’s suicide, brought on by the collapse of his family’s farm, one that had been active for four generations, and a breakup. He talked about his own coping method, drinking, and how he started having his own thoughts of suicide. While we talked, Bobbi came over a few times to share old photos of the farm from the 1880s and to play jokes on and tease Randy. He told me later she had saved his life. For The Washington Post
